When talking to someone who might be struggling with an eating disorder, it’s important to approach the conversation with sensitivity and empathy. Here are eight things to avoid saying:

1. "You don't look like you have an eating disorder."

Eating disorders affect people of all shapes and sizes. This comment can be dismissive and invalidating.

2. "Just eat more/less."

Eating disorders are complex mental health issues, and oversimplifying the solution can make the person feel misunderstood and unsupported.

3. "I wish I had your willpower."

This can unintentionally glorify or minimize the seriousness of their condition.

4. "You're just doing this for attention."

This is hurtful and dismisses the genuine struggle the person is experiencing.

5. "You should focus on more important things."

This minimizes their struggle and implies their experience is trivial.

6. "Why don't you just stop?"

Eating disorders are not something a person can simply turn off; they often require professional help to manage and overcome.

7. "You have no reason to feel this way."

This invalidates their feelings and experiences, which can further isolate them.

8. "You look so healthy/sick."

Comments about appearance can be triggering and may reinforce unhealthy behaviors.

Instead, it's important to offer support by listening, being non-judgmental, and encouraging them to seek professional help if they feel comfortable doing so.
